How to setup an Ad Hoc Wireless Network in Windows 7

Have you ever felt the need to transfer some important document directly from one place to another, without using any storage device? The two computers aren’t connected in a wireless manner, and Bluetooth takes up a lot of options and customizations. Tricky, isn’t it? Well, not so much anymore. There are ad hoc connections available between computers these days. Ad hoc is a Latin word, meaning ‘for this purpose’. So, an ad hoc connection is also a specific purpose oriented wireless connection that is established between two or more systems for the transfer of files on a temporary basis.

It is a direct wireless connection, often helping in connecting systems with internet facility without a router. This saves a lot of wiring and hassle. It is also a cost cutting method. But it is a temporary form of connection and not all the benefits of a full broadband connection can be enjoyed in an ad hoc network. As the name suggests, it is a specific purpose oriented connection only meant for the duration as a task.

The basic requirements to enable an ad hoc connection in between the two systems are as simple as windows Vista / 7 based computers with wireless network adapters.

How To Create an AdHoc Wireless Network in Windows 7/Vista?

  1. Click on the Start icon, then right-click on "Network" and select "Properties"
  2. In Windows Vista or 7, go to your "Network and Sharing Centre" under the Start option and then go to "Control Panel" and select "Network and Internet")
  3. Click on "Set up a new connection or network" option.

  5. Give a name to your ad hoc network, enable encryption procedures, and check the box to save this network to your profile. Your wireless network will thus be created, and your wireless adapter will commence broadcasting this signal.

  6. On client computers, you will be able to see the newly created network, and can connect to it.
These are some basic pointers that you will need to keep in mind while using these ad hoc connections:
  1. The systems need to be within a distance of 100 meters from each other. Proximity determines the strength of the network signal.
  2. You should take care that the main system is always connected. If that connection is lost, all connections from it will be lost too.
